Samriddhi Pandey, affectionately called ‘Sam’ by her team holds a Master’s Degree in Aerospace Vehicle Design with a specialisation in Aircraft Design from Cranfield University, UK. Her innovative spirit soared at Cranfield, where she designed a landing gear-less aircraft using magnetic levitation, saving 1.3 tonnes of fuel on an A320 aircraft. This is also where she conceptualised Defy’s flagship product, Birdy.
From a young age, Sam was captivated by the stars. Inspired by APJ Abdul Kalam’s “Wings of Fire,” she aimed for a career in aerospace by age 12. Her entrepreneurial spirit was kindled by studying Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, Peter Thiel, and Naval Ravikant. She learned how they combined customer needs with the right product, team, and story, demonstrating that business can be simple when focused on solving problems with technology
To build a lasting company, Sam knew she needed to understand how legendary companies work. After Cranfield, she worked on Rolls-Royce Aero engines projects in Derby, UK,
where she contributed to zero-defect manufacturing, technology export control, aircraft configuration management, and designing variable vane mechanisms and instrumentation parts for the RR UltraFan engine.
The idea for Defy Aerospace was born from a personal crisis. In 2019, while in the UK, her grandmother needed a critical blood transfusion in Varanasi, India. With the nearest blood supply 150 km away, Sam realised the urgent need for efficient delivery solutions for those in remote areas. In 2021, with a Netherlands visa to build a business in one hand and a UK visa to work in the other, she found that India was the place to begin and establish the foundations and values of Defy Aerospace.
Ancestrally from Varanasi, Sam was raised in Ghana, Nigeria, and Mumbai, and studied and worked in the UK. Supported by parents who nurtured her defiance against traditional gender roles, she is now building Defy Aerospace with a team of valiant individuals who challenge the status quo, prioritising ethics, planetary well-being, and collective human evolution.
